Location
Small hamlet in the country approximately 10 minutes from Arnac Pompadour.
Plenty of local fishing, canoeing & eating out.
Summer starts earlier & finishes later than the UK, so try "Out of Season"
Although our home is officially in Dordogne it only separated by a small valley from the Limousin, and Corrèze in particular. The hamlet of Le Pouvereau is to the south of the town of Pompadour not only famous for its association with Mme de Pompadour but also for all things equestrian.
The region is mainly rolling hills but as you travel southwards it becomes increasingly hilly and there are many deep gorges and ravines. In the nearby area you will find many very attractive towns and villages with frequent markets and, a little to the south, quite spectacular countryside.
Many places have an imposing château as this was at one time a well fought over area, with strong associations with Richard the Lionheart. Now it is more peaceful with its streams and rivers, its apple orchards and, of course, the Limousin cattle.
An especial feature of the area is its proximity to many other places of interest. It is equidistant from Limoges, Brive and Perigueux, and access to the tourist spots of the Dordogne is a short ride away.
Summer is a delight with long warm days and balmy evenings to sit outside with a glass of wine. Pompadour has an extensive programme of activities, with regular horse-racing in the amazing hippodrome, and then there are international level dressage, showjumping and eventing activities. Entry is often free and the whole atmosphere is that of a village enjoying itself almost every week-end.
Access to the region is easy with the A20 autoroute going north-south, and the east-west motorway, the A89, passing via Tulle, Brive and Perigueux, to the south of our area. Limoges (Limousin) and Bergerac (Dordogne) have airports, with flights from Stansted, East Midlands, Birmingham, Bristol etc, and in 2008 there will be a new international airport opening to the south of Brive. A main railway line links the area with Toulouse & with Paris, and is also a stopping place for the motor-rail from Calais in the summer months.

Horse events dates , in Pompadour:
Pompadour: A day at the Races, and much more!!!
I have tried to list out below the main events taking place in Pompadour during 2007. As you can well imagine most are horse related, but not all. A fuller list, but in French, can be obtained at the Tourist Information Office in one of the towers at the stable entrance opposite the Château.
The list is colour coded and Horse Racing, mainly on Sundays is in RED; Dressage, Showjumping and 3-Day Eventing is in GREEN and then in BLACK is a mixed back of other events.
The Horse Racing tends to be on a Sunday afternoon with French betting facilities (PMU). There is a panoramic restaurant where you can eat all afternoon, for about ˆ30, and watch all the events. Entrance to the Course is ˆ6. There are normally four flat races on the oval circuit and three steeple chase or cross country events. It is generally considered to be one of the most attractive settings for racing that you will ever find.
The Sport events, as they are known here, of Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing are of a very high level. Generally there is little attempt to attract spectators although it is frequently a very interesting occasion. Usually there are no entrance fees and you can walk around quite freely. The highest level is the Olympic level which attracts international participation, and then there is Professional 1, and 2, ( Pro1 & 2), which are slightly lower levels.
Particular note should be made of the week-end of July 14/15th. This is a full family day at the National Day of the Donkey in the Hippodrome; now in its 11th year. This will be animated, to say the least by a spectacular display of the running of bulls from the Camargue, attended by a team of horsemen. In the morning it is planned to run them through the streets of Pompadour, and into the Hippodrome, and in the afternoon thee will be a display in front of the stand of the qualities of the horsemen. In the evening there will be a fireworks display from the terrace of the chateau. On the 15th there will be horseracing all afternoon.
On the 4th and 5th August there are two evening spectaculars when horses and riders from a number of the studs (haras) come together to present the horses and to entertain you.
Another special day is the 15th August ( Festival of the Horse) when there will be morning Mass in the Hippodrome. For horselovers there will be showjumping in the morning and then a full race card in the afternoon going on into the evening. A special ‘passport’ will be available to allow you to have easy access to all the activities.
The 19th August is Elegance day at the races where you can wear your posh hat. It is also the day when, this year, 170 years of racing in Pompadour will be celebrated.
Finally there is a week 11-16th September when we have the Grand Week of the Horse. Although this is largely organised for the participants as it is a prestige event at French National level, but with many international participants, it is well worth a visit, if only to see the competition for mares and their foals!!
Then there is driving with all sorts of carriages, greyhound racing, even tractor pulling ( in Lubersac).
More information can be obtained at the Tourist Office.
